Job Description
The Administrative Assistant/Naturalist is a full-time, non-exempt, at-will employee of the Mahaska County Conservation Board. This position will have a probationary period of six (6) months.
The Administrative Assistant/Naturalist carries out assigned duties relating to office operation, public information, environmental education, and general administration under the supervision of the Executive Director. This position supports the daily operations of the Conservation Board through administrative tasks, program coordination, and direct public engagement.
In addition to administrative responsibilities, this position serves as a Naturalist, developing, planning, and conducting environmental education and outreach programs for schools, youth groups, and the general public. The Administrative Assistant/Naturalist also assists with marketing, social media management, volunteer coordination, and community events to promote conservation awareness and outdoor recreation opportunities.
Tasks and projects include but are not limited to general park maintenance such as mowing, trimming, and cleaning. This position is responsible for performing janitorial duties in offices, restrooms, and the nature center. It also oversees scheduling, inspections, collecting fees, and janitorial duties for the cabin facilities. The Administrative Assistant/Naturalist tracks and schedules all rentals of watercraft, shelters, and agricultural habitat equipment.
This position maintains MyCountyParks.com (MCP) online reservation system, keeping facility listings accurate and assisting users with reservations. The Administrative Assistant/Naturalist also maintains bank account records and credit card compliance.
Job Requirements
Education and Experience Requirements:
An associate degree as an Administrative Assistant or related field is required; or one to three years’ experience in a related field, or the equivalent combination of training and experience which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.
Required Special Certification Requirements:

Must have a valid Iowa driver’s license and dependable transportation.

Must have or be able to acquire within one (1) year of hire the following:

CPR, First Aid, AED certification.
Job Hours
Generally, 40 hours per week during a seven (7) day period. May be required to work additional hours on weekends or during the week. Weekly schedule may vary depending upon department needs.
